ARTIST STATEMENT

I create site-responsive installations that use light to address our spatial understanding of our surrounding environment. Often constructing projects entirely on-site based on the existing features of a location, I respond to the way the space we inhabit impacts our perceptual experience and awareness of how our world is shaped.

As we move through buildings in our everyday existence, the level of urban distraction renders much visual information invisible. We pay attention to how we use the space, but not its full impact on our psyche. By contemplating and reorganizing overlooked visual residue, such as the angles of shadows or patches of light coming in through a window, my projects explore tensions between time, space, structure, and movement.

I consider the shifting relationships between subjects and objects in space as akin to how pre-existing knowledge surrounds and shapes everything we encounter. This results in projects that attempt to capture subtle shifts in the conditions of the viewer’s presence that give shape to how and what we see.
