Site-based installation, The Portland Building Lobby, 2010
Iridescent acrylic paint, powdered graphite, lamp, H12’ X W16’ X D8’
This project captured shadows cast by the stairway railing of the Portland Building lobby with iridescent paint and graphite on the wall and floor. Existing light sources were repositioned and drawn as both amplification and residue of removed conditions. The reflective surface inverted the shape of shadow into luminous tonalities shifting relative to the viewer's movement, unsettling and readjusting their perceptions. Focusing on a single architectural feature of Michael Graves' famous building recalibrated its postmodern pastiche of historical periods into a meditation of the way we experience light and space and how the buildings we are contained by perceptually construct us as subjects.
This project was presented by the Regional Arts and Culture Coucil.
